Travel in London


London has a fantastic network of underground and overground rail services as well as an extensive bus and tram network.

All tickets and cards are valid on the entire London rail and bus network and can be purchased from authorised shops and underground stations - the most convenient are:

  • Visitor oyster cards, available on a pay-as-you-go basis where you credit the card for the desired amount – this is the cheapest way for single journeys
  • Anytime day travelcards, valid till 04.30 the following day, and costing from £9 for zones 1 & 2
  • Off-peak day travelcards, valid from 09.30 to 04.30 the following day, from Monday to Friday and any time on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, costing from £8.90 for zones 1 & 2
  • 7 day travelcards, valid any time for 7 days and costing from £31.40 for zones 1 & 2

All London airports have regular rail services to central London

Heathrow to central London:

  • Heathrow Express to Paddington in 15 minutes: £26 single (£21 online)
  • Heathrow Connect to Paddington in 25 minutes: £9.50 single
  • London Underground to Piccadilly Circus in 50 minutes: £5.70 single

Gatwick to central London:

  • Gatwick Express to Victoria in 30 minutes: £19.90 single/£34.90 return
  • Southern to Victoria in 40 minutes: £10 single
  • First Connect to St Pancras/King’s Cross in 40 minutes: £10 single

Stansted to central London:

  • Stansted Express to Liverpool Street in 45 minutes: £23.40 single/£33.20 return (special rates for 2 or more passengers)

London City has London Underground DLR services to central London every 7 minutes: journey time 15 minutes

Luton has frequent bus services to central London taking from 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes
